How to Track Certification Study Time in Google Calendar

A certification study tracker should answer more than “did I study today?” For someone preparing around a full-time job, the useful questions are which exam domains received time, how much of the planned work actually happened, and what needs to move next week.

Google Calendar can be a lightweight record of completed study sessions when events are named consistently. Start with a certification study schedule if you have not set aside study time yet. This article focuses on turning that schedule into a record you can review.

Record completed work, not just planned blocks

Keep your planned session on the calendar, then update it after studying. If you studied for 45 minutes instead of the scheduled 90, change the end time. If you completed a different topic, rename the event. Small edits make the calendar reflect your real preparation rather than an optimistic version of it.

A practical naming pattern is:

  • Certification | Domain | Activity
  • AWS SAA | Networking | Practice questions
  • CPA | Regulation | Flashcards
  • PMP | Mock exam | Review mistakes

Use the same certification name every time. Use a short, stable domain name instead of inventing new labels each session. That consistency lets you compare time by subject later.

Separate learning, practice, and review

Watching a lesson, answering practice questions, and reviewing missed questions all support the exam differently. Add the activity to the event title or use colors to distinguish them. You do not need a complex tracking system; three categories are enough to show whether your weeks are all input and no practice, or all practice without time to fix weak concepts.

Review one week at a time

Set a 15-minute weekly review before planning the next week. Look for three things:

  1. Completed hours: How much study time did you actually protect?
  2. Domain coverage: Which domains received little or no time?
  3. Planning gap: Which sessions moved or disappeared, and why?

Use the answer to place one or two specific sessions into the following week. For example, if networking practice was repeatedly moved for work meetings, choose an earlier weekend block rather than copying the same weekday time again.

Use Kotomil for a calendar-level view

With a consistent event name, Kotomil can analyze the study events in your connected calendar by date range and keyword. It can help you see the hours spent on a certification, the mix of domains, and changes from one week to the next. The figures are for personal planning and reflection; your calendar record remains the source for what you entered.

Keep the tracker simple enough to use

Do not rebuild an entire study system after every session. Update the duration, preserve the certification and domain in the title, and review the pattern once a week. That gives you enough evidence to improve your certification study schedule without turning exam preparation into another full-time project.
